AI Search for Dentists

When an AI describes your practice, give it the right facts.

AI-assisted search tools now answer some patient questions directly, instead of only listing websites. AI search visibility is the work of making accurate, consistent and useful information about your practice easy for these systems to find and understand. It improves the chances of being described correctly. It cannot guarantee being mentioned, cited or recommended.

From a list of links to a written answer.

In traditional search, patients compare your website with others. In AI-assisted answers, a system reads several sources and summarizes them first. The practice still depends on the same information, but has less say in how it is presented.

Find, interpret, compose, reference.

AI products do not all work the same way, and most don’t publish exactly how they choose sources. This is a simplified, general picture. At each stage there is something a practice can influence, and much it cannot.

  1. Stage 01Find

The system looks for sources, which may include search results, web pages or its own index.

Your part: Can it reach your pages?
  2. Stage 02Interpret

It reads those sources to work out what is true about the practice and the question.

Your part: Are your facts clear?
  3. Stage 03Compose

It writes an answer, combining several sources and sometimes leaving some out.

Your part: Do your sources agree?
  4. Stage 04Reference

Some products show citations or links; others do not.

Your part: Is a useful page there to cite?

One practice, described the same way everywhere.

When sources disagree about your hours, services or dentists, an AI answer may repeat the wrong version or leave you out. Consistent facts are the most practical starting point. Much of this overlaps with local SEO, which keeps your profile and listings accurate.

  • Practice nameThe same everywhere: website, Google profile, directories and social profiles.
  • Location and hoursCorrect address, offices, hours and how to reach each one.
  • ServicesThe treatments you actually provide, described specifically, not a generic list.
  • CliniciansDentists and specialists with accurate names, roles and verifiable credentials.
  • Patient practicalitiesNew-patient process, accepted plans, accessibility and languages spoken, where true.

Readable before it can be referenced.

Most of what helps AI tools understand a practice is the same as what helps search engines: pages that can be reached and read, with clear structure. Building that is the job of website development; organizing it for patients is website design.

Pages that can be reached

Crawlable

Main content in the page’s HTML, not hidden behind scripts, and not blocked unintentionally.

A deliberate choice

Crawler decisions

Some AI companies use named crawlers that sites can allow or block. Blocking can affect whether your pages are used. The choice should be deliberate and reviewed.

Accurate markup

Structured information

Schema markup can describe the practice, its locations and services, as long as it matches what visitors can see.

Real answers

Useful content

Treatment pages that answer the questions patients ask, written plainly and reviewed by your dental team.

Two parts of the same work.

You will see these terms used in different ways across the industry. Here is how we use them. Both sit inside AI search visibility and depend on the foundations above.

Part · Generative engines

GEO

Generative engine optimization: helping AI tools that write answers understand the practice as a clear, trustworthy entity and find sources worth referencing.

Read about GEO for dental practices.

Part · Direct answers

AEO

Answer engine optimization: structuring content so specific patient questions get direct, accurate answers that systems can pick up, including in search features and voice assistants.

Read about AEO for dentists.

Honest about what can be seen.

Reporting for AI search is limited and still developing. We report what can be observed and say plainly what cannot.

Can be observed
  • Referral visits from AI products that pass identifiable referrer information.
  • Sampled checks of how AI tools describe the practice for a defined set of questions.
  • Accuracy of practice facts across the web, before and after corrections.
  • Organic and local performance, which shares the same foundations.
Cannot be measured reliably
  • A complete count of how often the practice is mentioned in AI answers.
  • Stable “rankings” inside AI answers, which change by person and over time.
  • Patients who read an AI answer and then call without clicking.
  • Exactly which source an AI system relied on for a given answer.

Built on the same ground.

AI search visibility is not a replacement for dental SEO. Many AI products draw on search results, and the pages that serve patients well in search are usually the ones worth referencing in an answer.

If you are deciding how much attention AI search deserves compared with other channels, that belongs in a dental marketing strategy.

A note on evidence. AI search is changing quickly. Platform behavior described on this page is general and may change. We avoid “secret tactics” and anything that would mislead AI tools or patients.

Audit, correct, observe.

The exact scope is agreed with you. This is the typical shape of the work.

  1. Step 01Fact audit

Compare practice facts across your website, profile and key listings and note every inconsistency.

  2. Step 02Sample questions

Agree a set of realistic patient questions and record how several AI tools currently respond.

  3. Step 03Technical check

Review crawlability, crawler settings, structured data and whether main content is visible in the HTML.

  4. Step 04Content gaps

Identify questions your site does not answer clearly and plan pages or improvements.

  5. Step 05Monitor

Repeat the sampled checks over time, and report changes with their limitations stated.

About AI search for dentists

Q.01

Can you get our practice recommended by ChatGPT or Google’s AI?

No one can guarantee that. Each AI product decides independently, and answers change with the question, location and time. What we can do is make accurate, useful information about your practice easier to find and understand.

Q.02

Is AI search replacing Google search for patients?

Behavior is changing, but we don’t publish adoption figures we cannot verify. Traditional search, maps and AI answers currently exist side by side, often on the same results page.

Q.03

Does this replace SEO?

No. Most AI search visibility work depends on the same foundations as SEO and local SEO: crawlable pages, useful content and consistent practice information.

Q.04

How long does it take?

Fixing inconsistent facts and technical issues can be done relatively quickly. Whether and when AI systems reflect those changes is outside anyone’s control and varies by product.

Q.05

Should we block AI crawlers?

It is a business decision. Blocking some crawlers may reduce how your content is used in certain AI products. We explain the trade-offs and current options so you can decide.

Q.06

What is the difference between GEO and AEO?

Both are parts of AI search visibility. GEO focuses on being understood and referenced by generative AI tools; AEO focuses on giving direct, well-structured answers to specific questions. Each has its own page with more detail.
